How to create and use issuer lists

How to create and use issuer lists

Avantis allows you to create Issuer Lists which can then be used to limit search results or else can be exported to Excel for external use.  Using any combination of Avantis' powerful criteria, you can identify companies that meet various criteria and save these issuers into an Issuer List.  These lists can be added to any searches (filings, news, insider transactions, audit fees, auditor changes, etc.) to limit results to only those that pertain to the issuers in the lists included.   This is a powerful way to limit results of searches to a curated list of filers without repetitively making the same selections over and over every time you want to search.

Video: Searching Issuer Lists

To search issuers

  1. Start in the Issuers dataset
  2. Combine any criteria to run a search as you would in filings
  3. Be aware that your results will be comprised of issuers.  Not filings or documents – you will be producing a list of companies
  4. This list of companies can be saved for future reference as well as to be used as criteria for Filings, News, Insider Transaction, Audit Fee, or Auditor Change searches going forward
    1. To save this list of issuers see below

Editing Issuer Lists - how to add or remove issuers from an issuer list, or create a new one

There are 2 methods of populating Issuer Lists

Method #1 - adding or removing issuers using the Select List window

The Select Lists window is helpful when you want to see all your lists at once, decide which list(s) to add to or remove from, or else whenever you will be working with different lists and don’t want any one of them added to your active list since they will be changing on a per search basis.  This is the most common way to add to lists.
  1. Go to the Issuers dataset in your dataset selector
  2. Run a search to get a set of issuers as results in your results grid
    1. You can search by issuer name or else use any mix of criteria (industry, exchange, market cap, province, etc.) to accomplish this
  3. Select the issuers you want to add to your list(s) using the checkboxes on the left
  4. Click on the blue “Select Lists” link at the top right side of your result grid to open your Select Lists window
  5. Select the list (or several lists if you will be adding or removing the same results from multiple lists at the same time) you want to add or remove from and click Add to list or else Remove from list at the bottom right
  6. If you want to create a new list to add results to, type in the name you wish to call it, let it search and fail to find it, then click on "Create new" beside the name you typed
  7. Your list items count will update to reflect the total amount of items currently in that list, including what you just added or removed
    1. There is no harm in trying to remove items from list that don’t actually include them.   In these cases, it will affirm it removed all items.  Please note that for any issuers that did not originally appear in the list, it will ignore the instruction to remove them (because they aren't in that list), but it will always remove from any lists in which the item did actually appear
    2. This is a good way to remove an issuer from any and all lists they are in, should you ever need to do this

Method #2 – adding or removing issuers using an active list

Active lists are most useful when you’ll be doing several searches, one after the other, that you will use to retrieve and add results to the same list(s).   If you will be focusing on populating or depopulating the same list or group of lists for an extended period of time (more than one search), it makes sense to set it as an active list so that you can quickly add to it by simply clicking the plus sign beside its name as described below.  You can set one list as your active list or else select a number of different lists to all be active simultaneously so that you can add or remove from all of them at one time

  1. Go to the Issuers dataset in your dataset selector
  2. Run a search to get a result set of issuers in your results grid
    1.  You can search by issuer name or else use any mix of criteria (industry, exchange, market cap, province, etc.) to accomplish this
  3. Click on the blue “Select lists” link at the top right side of your result grid to open your Select List window
  4.  Select the list (or several lists if you will be adding or removing the same results from multiple lists at the same time) you want to add or remove from and click Select at the bottom right
  5.  If you want to create a list to add as your selected list, type in the name you wish to call it, let it search and fail to find it, then click on "Create new" beside the name you typed, then select it and click Select at the bottom right
  6. The Select List window will close, and the “Select List” link on the upper right of your result list will now be the name of the list you selected (if you selected multiple lists to work with simultaneously, it will say “multiple lists”)
  7. You can now select any results from your search (using the checkboxes) and simply click on the plus sign beside the “Select List” link on the upper right to add them to the list(s) you have selected as your active list(s). For each subsequent search you run, you can simply click on this plus sign to add selected results.
  8.  You can also click on the minus sign to remove these results from any lists that had them
    1. There is no harm in trying to remove items from lists that don’t have them included.

Renaming a list

  1.  Click on “Select lists” on the upper right-hand side of your result grid
  2.  Locate the list you’d like to rename
  3.  Click on the pencil beside its name to edit
  4. Rename it in the “List name” field

Deleting a list

  1. Method 1 – from the “Select Lists” window
    1. One method is to click on the “Select lists” link on the upper right-hand side of your result grid
    2. In the Select list window, click on the trash can beside any list name to delete it
  2. Method 2 – from the “Edit List” window
    1. The other method is to click on the “Select lists” link on the upper right-hand side of your result grid
    2. Click on the pencil beside any list you want to delete to open its “Edit List” screen
    3. Click on the “Delete” button at the bottom of the “Edit List” screen

  1. Navigate to the Issuers dataset
  2. Open the Issuer List criteria and select the issuer list you want to delete issuers from
  3. Click Search
  4. In your search results, select the issuers you want to remove
  5. Click on "Add to lists" (in blue above your list on the right - see the first screenshot above)
  6. Select the list(s) you want to remove these issuers from (at least the list you just selected in criteria, possibly other lists as well)
  7. Click on "Remove from list"

Searching using an Issuer List

  1. First ensure the issuer list you want to search against already exists.   If not, then create it using the above steps
  2. Leave the Issuer dataset and launch either the Filings, Insider Transactions, News, Audit Fees, or Auditor Change datasets
  3. Open the “Issuer Lists” criteria
  4. Add whichever list(s) you’d like to search against

  6. Click Search
  7. Avantis will only get you results from issuers you have included in your list
