Searching Historical SEDAR and SEC Press Releases (combined)

Avantis makes it easy to search press releases in both the SEDAR collection and the SEC collection at the same time, but there are some inherent distinctions in strategy between the two collections due to the nature of the documents.  SEDAR makes press release searching easy because there is a clear document category for News Releases.  On the SEC side, their press releases are *typically* filed as exhibit 99s to 6Ks and 8Ks.  Below is a strategy for doing a combined press release search in the SEDAR and SEC collections, using best practices.

Searching Historical SEDAR and SEC Press Releases

You will employ two different strategies to find press releases in SEDAR and in SEC, but they can be run in tandem, in one search:
  1. Open ~Document Category~ (if you don't have this criteria displayed among your visible criteria, search for it in "Add criteria") 
    1. Type in "News"
      1. Add  [News Releases] under SEDAR
    2. Type in "8K"
      1. Add [8K, 6K] under SEC
    3. Click "Select"
  2. Open ~Exhibits~ (if you don't have this criteria displayed among your visible criteria, search for it in "Add criteria")
    1. Type in "99"
      1. Add [Ex-99 - Additional Exhibits]
    2. Click "Select"
  3. OPTIONAL: You may choose to add search terms like News Release or Press Release
    1. This is to cut down on non-news exhibits - the trade off is you might miss a press release here or there that doesn't say "news release" or "press release"
  4. OPTIONAL: You may choose to add AND and then add another set of search terms you are looking for
    1. Example: you may choose to add AND third quarter results to retrieve press releases that discuss third quarter results
  5. Click Search
